Ufuoma Muwhen ,

Age: 20yrs old

I am currently studying biological sciences at the University of Alberta. Currently, I am a little over two years after the transplant and I am fine, and I am only taking penicillin and vitamin D prophylaxis. In January 2018, I was removed all my transplant medications – and I was just told to continue taking penicillin and vitamin D. A few words of encouragement that made me experience Sickle cell disease and transplantation was a quote that my mother ALWAYS told me: 7 years is not eternal. These words constantly reminded me that even if my current situation is no longer so pleasant, it will come true.

Did You Know?

The only known cure for Sickle Cell Disease is a stem cell transplant (or bone marrow transplant). Due to the significant risks involved in this procedure, including life-threatening complications, it is rarely an option for sickle cell patients.
