Ufuoma Muwhen

Ufuoma Muwhen,

Age: 20yrs old

I’m currently studying biological sciences at the University of Alberta. Currently, I am just over two years post-transplant and doing WELL, and am just taking penicillin and vitamin D for prophylaxis. In January 2018, I was taken off all my transplant medication – and was just told to continue penicillin and vitamin D. Some words of encouragement that kept me going through sickle cell crises and the transplant was a quote that my mom ALWAYS told me, “7 years is not forever”. These words continually reminded that although my current situation isn’t so pleasant now, it will come to pass.

Did you know?

Extremely cold weather can trigger a pain crisis in a child. Even when bundled up in a snowsuit, the shift in temperature may be enough to cause red blood cells to begin sickling in just a few minutes of outdoor play.
